Northwest Coast Polychrome Mask Circa 1890Up for autcion is a museum quality northwest coast polychrome shaman's dance mask circa 1890. This si an amazing ethnographic item and is original in all respects. Tihs piece was not sculpted as a tourist item, but rather as an important iconographic ceremonial mask. The mouth is inlaid with elk teeth, and the projecting tongue is typical or early northwest coast masks. It is painted with red, blue, and black polychrome paint which is faided in areas. This mask has not been cleaned. The reverse of the mask has a smooth patina which is clear evidence of it's use nad age. As seen, there are square seeing yee holes cut above the eyes. Three is also one small hole drilled on the bottom of the mask which would have been used for suspension. This northwest coast maks is from washington state or south eastern alaska. It's cultural affiliation is in the tlingit, bella coola, haida, tsimshian area. This is a larger than life size mask and measures 11 in height, 7 1/2 in width, and 5 1/2 in depth. One elk tooth is missing, and a small 1 piece has been reatatched to the upper lip. I have maintaned 100% positive feedback since 2001 so ibd with confidence. This is a on reserve auction.Feel free to contact me for additional phoots or questions. |
